Ubud – A Little Bit of Chaos, a Whole Lot of Charm!
Oh, Ubud! What a colourful, bustling, wonderfully chaotic place you are!
There’s certainly no shortage of things to see and do in the heart of Ubud. From the moment you arrive, you’re surrounded by people, scooters, shops, restaurants and an incredible mix of sights and sounds.
Everywhere you look, there’s something happening!
The streets are filled with arts and crafts, beautiful clothing, little boutiques, spas and more places to eat than you could possibly count.
And the people! Such a wonderful mix of locals and visitors, all going about their day.
It’s busy, it’s colourful, it’s noisy, and it’s absolutely fascinating!
Colour, Culture and Characters
One of the things I love about Bali is how much culture and tradition you can experience simply by wandering around.
In Ubud, there’s beautiful traditional clothing, music, colourful ceremonies and so many interesting people.
You really don’t know where to look next!
And then there are the people you meet along the way.
There’s something lovely about exchanging a smile, having a little chat or simply watching everyday life unfold around you.
Sometimes it’s those little moments that make the biggest impression.
Watch Your Step!
Now, I must mention the footpaths!
Walking around Ubud is an adventure in itself. Between the crowds, uneven paving, unexpected obstacles and scooters buzzing past, you certainly need to keep your wits about you.
It’s not exactly a leisurely stroll along a perfectly paved footpath!
But that’s all part of the experience, and there’s always something interesting to distract you.
And then there are the monkeys!
Yes, monkeys!
Not content with staying amongst the trees, some of these cheeky characters seem quite happy to use the enormous bundles of overhead cables as their own personal highway.
Only in Bali!
And there’s always one sitting up high, looking down as though he owns the place!
You find yourself looking up, wondering how on earth they manage it, before remembering that you really should be watching where you’re putting your feet!
A Different Side of Ubud
But here’s something I absolutely loved about Ubud.
Just when you think it’s all crowds, traffic, shops and noise, you can discover something completely different.
As you wander along the main street, past the marketplace, take a turn into one of the smaller streets and start heading towards the rice fields.
There’s a bit of an uphill walk, nothing too dramatic, but enough to remind you that you’re getting some exercise!
And then something rather lovely happens.
The crowds begin to disappear.
The sounds of traffic slowly fade into the background.
The busy shops, restaurants and boutiques give way to banana trees, lush greenery and beautiful rice fields.
And suddenly, you can feel yourself relaxing.
It’s almost as though someone has turned down the volume on the world.
Just Beautiful!
The scenery is breathtaking.
Narrow little pathways wind their way through the greenery, with rice fields stretching out around you.
There’s wildlife, beautiful tropical plants and farmers quietly going about the important business of caring for their crops.
It’s such a wonderful contrast to the busy streets only a short distance away.
One minute you’re dodging people and scooters, and the next you’re surrounded by nature and a lovely sense of calm.
The pathways are narrow but quite manageable, and every little turn seems to reveal another beautiful view.
It’s the sort of place where you don’t need to rush.
In fact, that’s probably the nicest thing about it.
You can simply wander, look around, enjoy the fresh air and appreciate what’s right in front of you.
No shopping list. No timetable. No particular destination.
Just being there.
Two Sides of the Same Wonderful Place
I think that’s what makes Ubud so interesting.
On one hand, you’ve got this wonderfully busy, colourful town full of energy, creativity and people.
On the other, there’s a peaceful, green countryside waiting to be discovered just beyond the hustle and bustle.
Both are beautiful in their own way.
I loved seeing the traditional clothing, the smiling faces, the music, the markets and all the little moments of everyday life.
And I equally loved being able to wander away from it all and find somewhere quiet.
Ubud certainly keeps you on your toes, sometimes quite literally!
But it also reminds you how lovely it can be to slow down.
So, if you find yourself in Ubud, enjoy the busy streets, browse the shops, admire the beautiful Balinese culture and take in all that wonderful colour.
But don’t forget to turn down one of those little side streets.
You never know what you might discover.
And most importantly, take a moment.
Stop, look around, breathe it all in and enjoy.
Sometimes the loveliest part of travelling is simply taking the time to appreciate where you are.
